Anonymous asked: Hey, I love your photos & you've really inspired me towards what I hope could be my future career, so thanks for that.
I was just wondering, you mentioned the other week that you did a photojournalism course at uni, was that the whole of your degree or just part of it? And what made you decide to do the degree you did and how did you choose what Uni to do it at?
Hey,
I studied a Photojournalism FdA after completing a Media Foundation course, both at the London College Of Communication. I’d known somewhere in the back of my mind that I wanted to be a music photographer ever since I started taking photos at gigs when I was sixteen but I didn’t really have a plan for how to make this happen. My parents were trying to push me more towards a digital media degree, where I’d have more chance of getting a job than if I studied photography, and so I ended up doing the Media Foundation. However while I was doing this course I realised it would be possible to do a Photojournalism degree, incorporating both writing and photography, and focusing more on capturing a moment rather than creating one. It fitted with my style and so that’s what I went on to do.
I think I badly botched up a few interviews along the way and I could’ve done a third year of my Photojournalism course to make it into a full BA but I forgot to apply in time. I have habits of falling in and out of things but usually find that it all ends up making some sense.
The FdA has now been replaced with the Photojournalism BA and the London College Of Communication is part of the University Of The Arts London so it’s a brilliant creative hub in general. Not that I’m trying to sell it or anything. I think there may be one or two other Photojournalism courses in the country but this is the only one I can name, and studying in London is certainly a good idea if you want to do internships at the same time.
I hope this answers your questions and thanks for the kind words, it’s amazing to think my work could inspire someone.
Hello 2010
Everything’s not quite shiny and new but it is white and fluffy, and boy, do I love the snow. I’ve been out taking photos on my walks to the train station so there should be some pretty pictures soon, but for now I’ll leave you with the option of asking me a question.
No, not formspring, but Tumblr’s new question-asking page. You can ask me anything, anonymously or with your identity revealed.
Go on, say hello
Goodbye 2009
Goodness, that’s another year gone. And another decade.
2009 has seen me take some of my best photos and most will be going on a shiny new website I’m working on at the moment. However for now, here’s a few of my best shots, including a rare colour photograph from Young Guns’ video shoot last month.
Enjoy and see you in 2010.
Slam Dunk feature & portraits
The feature which Lola Tate and I did on Slam Dunk festival is now up on The Fly’s website. Go have a look.
We interviewed six of the seven bands we saw at the festival and it was one busy day! Lots of running around, missed calls, wristband checking and bumping into friends. I’ve already posted some live shots on here and on my flickr but I also took portrait shots of the bands we interviewed. Some have come out particularly well, despite using only available light thanks to my flash playing up on the day.

These two portraits of Neil, singer of Attack! Attack!, are the perfect examples. Click to view big.
