I was just wondering, you mentioned the other week that you did a photojournalism course at uni, was that the whole of your degree or just part of it? And what made you decide to do the degree you did and how did you choose what Uni to do it at?

I studied a Photojournalism FdA after completing a Media Foundation course, both at the London College Of Communication.  I’d known somewhere in the back of my mind that I wanted to be a music photographer ever since I started taking photos at gigs when I was sixteen but I didn’t really have a plan for how to make this happen.  My parents were trying to push me more towards a digital media degree, where I’d have more chance of getting a job than if I studied photography, and so I ended up doing the Media Foundation.  However while I was doing this course I realised it would be possible to do a Photojournalism degree, incorporating both writing and photography, and focusing more on capturing a moment rather than creating one.  It fitted with my style and so that’s what I went on to do.

I think I badly botched up a few interviews along the way and I could’ve done a third year of my Photojournalism course to make it into a full BA but I forgot to apply in time.  I have habits of falling in and out of things but usually find that it all ends up making some sense.

The FdA has now been replaced with the Photojournalism BA and the London College Of Communication is part of the University Of The Arts London so it’s a brilliant creative hub in general.  Not that I’m trying to sell it or anything.  I think there may be one or two other Photojournalism courses in the country but this is the only one I can name, and studying in London is certainly a good idea if you want to do internships at the same time.
